DIVORCE: Tips
Take your time. Think It Through. Don't worry about changing your mind - a lot!
It is all part of the process.

DECISION-MAKING TIME: The emotional stress that comes with divorce can be overwhelming and infiltrate every aspect of your life. Many people develop sleep problems, and have difficulty making decisions. Yet, because divorce has such long-lasting consequences, it is important to approach it as rationally as possible. The ramifications of a premature decision, or a bad divorce settlement can be extremely harmful in the long run. For this reason, be sure to take your time, think it through, and don't worry about changing your mind - a lot! It is all part of the process.

3 DECISION-MAKING TIPS: These tips are designed to help you navigate the divorce-question sanely and responsibly - thus safeguarding your future!
#1: Gain support - talk out your feelings with a therapist or friend so that the emotions you have in the moment don't overly influence the decisions you make about your future.
#2: Get informed about the legal and financial aspects of divorce, including the cost, your state laws and custody. It is also helpful to speak with a financial expert (such as an accountant) in order to assess your resources and strategize about the future.
#3: Think it through - w/ pen and paper, examine practical concerns:
* Will you have to move? If so, where will you live?
* Will you lose ownership of your home, car? If so, how will that impact you?
* Will your income level change? If so, how will you manage?
* How will you adjust to a new social life (without your ex)?
* If you have children, how will parenting change?
* Will the children have to change schools or move? How will that affect them?
* How will the children adapt to the changes, including less time with you?
